Group H is arguably the most competitive at the World Cup and both teams will be looking for a positive start to the tournament in Russia

Poland face Senegal in their World Cup opener on Tuesday in the second game to take place from Group H after Colombia and Japan meet earlier in the day.

In what is probably the most tightly-contested group in this year’s World Cup with little separating all four teams, Poland and Senegal will be hoping to win their opener to get their tournament off on the right note.

Poland have not gone beyond the group stage in the World Cup since 1986, with their best finish being third in the 1974 and 1982 tournaments. In their solitary World Cup appearance in 2002, Senegal surprised many by reaching the quarter-final stage, but they will be boosted going into this tournament given the impressive squad that is now at their disposal.

Squads & Team News

Poland will be relying upon their all-time leading goalscorer Robert Lewandowski to fire his team through the group stages and further into the tournament. Much of the Poland team has remained the same in recent years, with the trio of Blaszczykowski, Zielinski and Grosicki expected to offer the support behind the Bayern Munich frontman.

Potential Poland XI: Szczesny; Piszczek, Pazdan, Bednarek, Rybus; Goralski, Krychowiak, Blaszczykowski, Zielinski, Grosicki; Lewandowski

The spearhead of this promising Senegal side is Liverpool’s Sadio Mane , who has scored 20 from his 44 appearances in all competitions at club level this season. The Premier League trio of Ndiaye, Kouyate and Gueye will look to provide the solidity in the Senegalese midfield, with Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly the defensive lynchpin.

Potential Senegal XI: N’Diaye, Gassama, Mbodji, Koulibaly, Sabaly; Ndiaye, Kouyate, Gueye; Balde, Niang, Mane

Match Preview

Poland will be the slight favourites going into this one, but really it will be anyone’s game with both sides capable of causing the other serious problems. The deciding factor in this game may well be the performances of each respective team’s star players – Sadio Mane and Robert Lewandowski.

In the lead-up to the tournament, Senegal have had a mixed record, but they defeated South Korea 2-0 last time out. Poland, meanwhile, defeated Lithuania 4-0 in their last game, after drawing 2-2 with Chile the week prior.

Group H is certainly the hardest to call in the World Cup. Poland and Senegal will be hoping to get off to a positive start in the group, so they can lay a solid foundation for the games which follow.

This looks like being the last chance for the current crop of Polish stars to make an impact at a World Cup, so all associated with them will be going into the tournament with high hopes that they at least can get out of the group stage.

Senegal, however, will not be expecting to advance, given that Poland and Colombia are arguably stronger on paper, but they certainly have enough quality throughout the team to put the other sides in the group under pressure.
