Argentina can still qualify for the last 16 by beating Nigeria after the Super Eagles earned a 2-0 win over Iceland in Group D.
2018 World Cup
3′ Sigurdsson double strikes saved by Uzoho!
Iceland win a promising free-kick in a central area 25 yards or so from goal. Gylfi Sigurdsson whips it towards the top-left corner, but Uzoho reads it well and tips the effort behind.
6′ Sigurdsson strike saved again!
Gylfi Sigurdsson is played into space on the edge of the box and tries to place a shot into the bottom-right corner, but Uzoho gets down well and holds the shot.
45′ Finnbogasson misses a golden chance!
Sigurdsson’s free-kick delivery is outstanding, but Finnbogasson just can’t quite connect with it and it glances just wide of the goal! Best chance of the half.
49′ GOAL! Nigeria 1-0 Iceland (Musa)
It’s 1-0 here as Musa finishes off a quick counter-attack in some style, controlling Moses’ cross and rifling home a thunderbolt of a strike from inside the box! Game on!
Moses used his pace well to break from an Iceland long throw, dragging his side up the pitch and crossing for Musa to thump home emphatically.
57′ Halldorsson stops Ndidi’s shot!
Ndidi smacks a fantastic, dipping strike from the edge of the box that takes a little deflection on its way through, but Halldorsson does really well to tip it over the bar!
73′ Musa’s shot hits the bar!
Musa rattles the crossbar with a wicked, curling strike that fools the goalkeeper into comitting to his left while the strike comes back into the middle, but it clatters back off the bar!
75′ GOAL! Nigeria 2-0 Iceland (Musa)
Musa races down the left and beats his man for pace, before cutting inside him and then rounding the charging goalkeeper, then picking his spot and rifling it into the top corner!
Omeruo played a long ball down the line, and Musa had a great deal to do from there, but he showed incredible pace and composure to pull it off!
83′ Penalty Missed! (Sigurdsson)
PENALTY! Finnbogasson races into the box and Ebuehi clips him at the byline! The referee doesn’t give it initially, but following a VAR check, the referee points to the spot!
Gylfi Sigurdsson goes for the top-right corner and fires it over the bar! He took a short run-up and watched the goalkeeper dive the wrong way, but couldn’t hit the target! That might put an end to Iceland’s comeback hopes.
Ahmed Musa struck both goals as Nigeria boosted their World Cup qualification hopes with a 2-0 defeat of Iceland, a result that is also good news for Argentina.
Lionel Messi’s team were pushed to the brink of an early exit after a stunning 3-0 loss to Croatia on Thursday, but victory in their final Group D game against Nigeria could now send them through to the last 16.
Musa was left out of Nigeria’s loss to Croatia but he justified his recall to the side with the opening goal shortly after the interval at the Volgograd Arena on Friday.
The forward controlled a cross from Victor Moses and thumped an unstoppable drive into the roof of the net, with Musa becoming the Super Eagles’ top scorer in the history of the tournament courtesy of his third World Cup goal.
Nigeria were poor in the first half – failing to record a single shot – but they were much improved after the break, Musa adding another to his personal tally in the 75th minute as Iceland’s rock-like resilience crumbled.
After Gylfi Sigurdsson missed a late penalty, Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side could be heading home from their first World Cup unless they beat already qualified Croatia and Argentina do not take three points against Nigeria, although goal difference could yet come into play.
