11′ CHANCE! Pogba’s shot wide out

CLOSE! Pogba turns his man 25 yards from goal and goes for a right-footed strike. He gets the power on his effort and curl towards the bottom corner. It bounces awkwardly in front of Gallese, although it drifts just wide of the target.

15′ CHANCE! Griezmann’s shot saved

SAVE! Griezmann latches on to a loose ball in the penalty area and fires low towards goal, but Gallese is down to make the stop with his legs.

30′ Fine stop from Lloris!

CHANCE! Flores feeds the ball into Guerrero in the box and he takes a good first touch to get away from Umtiti. He only has to place his strike either side of Lloris, but he goes straight at the keeper, who makes a solid stop.

34′ GOAL! France 1-0 Peru (Mbappé)

This time Mbappe does find the net as he converts from close range. Giroud did the hard work with a run into the box to latch on to Griezmann’s throughball. His strike was deflected by Ramos, but it beat Gallese.

Mbappe followed the ball in and was able to guide it over the line. A hammer blow for Peru.

50′ POST! Aquino one inch away from scoring golazo

OFF THE POST! Farfan tees up Aquino on the edge of the box. He makes sweet contact with his right-footed strike. It pings off his foot and travels towards the top corner, but his effort hits the upright and travels behind for a goal-kick. Peru inches away from an equaliser.

68′ OVER! Advicula’s shot over the bar

OVER! Advincula and Carrillo combine down the right flank. The full-back cuts back to shoot on his left foot with a rasping effort at goal, which sails just a fraction over the bar.

Match Report

Kylian Mbappe made history as France booked their place in the World Cup’s knockout rounds with an unconvincing 1-0 Group C defeat of Peru.

France were fortunate in their 2-1 opening win over Australia and they had slices of luck again at the Ekaterinburg Arena on Thursday.

Mbappe’s goal, which came from close-range after Olivier Giroud’s shot took a wicked deflection to beat goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, saw the 19-year-old become the youngest player to score for France at a major international tournament.

As they did in losing narrowly to Denmark, Peru had plenty of chances, returning captain Paolo Guerrero firing at Hugo Lloris and Pedro Aquino clipping the post with a super strike from range.

However, Peru were unable to find a way through and Ricardo Gareca’s side – who have yet to find the net in Russia – are certain to be knocked out.

Denmark look set to join France in the last 16 after their 1-1 draw with Australia, but they need a point against Les Bleus in their final outing to be certain of progressing.
