Founded in Sydney in 1991, Zimmermann has quietly built up a global empire, with stores everywhere from Mayfair to Miami and stockists ranging from Net-a-Porter and Barneys to My Theresa. Adored for the sophisticated femininity of the designs and bold prints that are just as appropriate at the beach as they are at the bar, last weekend, sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann celebrated the opening of a new store as the brand set up shop in the heart of Saint-Tropez.
To coincide with the launch, the Zimmermann siblings hosted a weekend in the South of France for friends of the brand, with attendees such as Christine Centenera, Emma Roberts, Eliza Cummings, Aymeline Valade and Bambi Northwood Blyth acting as the perfect clothes horses for their latest collection: “It’s like a dream to open a store in Saint-Tropez, and we wanted to mark the occasion by inviting friends and family to celebrate with us over a sun-kissed weekend on the Cote d’Azur,” explained Nicky Zimmermann, Creative Director. “As the brand expands, we are so grateful for the people who have been with us on our journey.”
As the go-to brand for the stylish jet-setter, below Vogue asked Nicky Zimmermann to share her top styling tips for summer.
Don a straw hat
“I have an obsession with big straw hats. We’ve done lots of delicate woven straws with raw edges and details like feathers and tubular cords; it’s always about the quality of the straw! We have an ongoing collaboration with an Australian milliner called the Hatmaker, I wear them everywhere. They are lightweight with great proportions. For me they work best when they’re used to play with volume; when they off-set the cuteness of a short playsuit for example. Emma Roberts showed everyone how it’s done on our recent trip together.”
All white on the night
“I have always loved beautiful white embroidered dresses or fresh white separates for day – a voluminous skirt worn with an over sized shirt, pintucking and delicate lace insert details. I love a slightly cropped waist with a tie detail and again playing with proportions. Contrasts are key for me: if a look’s especially pretty, I’ll pair with a more masculine sandal or perhaps chunky jewellery.”
Summer doesn’t need to mean short-sleeved
“One of my favourite dresses for holidays is our long sleeved, overblown floral linen dress. I love the simple A-line shape and high neck. Simple. I forgot mine when I packed for my most recent travels, but I got to pick one up from the new Saint-Tropez store!”
Accessorise with delicate jewellery
“I love lots of layered up, delicate gold jewellery. We made some fun charm necklaces and I’ve paired them with lots of shell jewellery. In our collections we use loose, oversized sleeves so frequently and I always love to see a glint of gold on wrists; it’s super elegant. When it comes to sleeve shapes, and volume in any guise, bigger is always better in the hot weather.”
Experiment with print and texture
“Try delicate printed chiffon, something a little sheer or even a crinkle cheesecloth. I often wear a long dress but for our Summer Swim Collection we did lots of great flowing pants, with matching tops as a set. Keep the look relaxed with a swimsuit underneath and I love the ease for a quick change at pool parties!”
