The maiden edition of the African loincloth exhibition opened in Brazzaville at the weekend with participation of creators and designers from 15 African countries.

The expo with the theme: “Promoting the culture and the African woman through the loincloth”, was officially opened by Congolese First Lady, Antoinette Sassou Nguesso.

The two-day event featured a fashion catwalk, an evening gala and a concert.

“This first edition of the African loincloth show is a way of celebrating the loincloth and pay tribute to our craftsmen who, thanks to their work and creativity, allow our culture to cross time by reconciling generations,” Prisca Pamela Okemba, Director of ‘La Fleur de Lys’ the event communication agency, which initiated the show, said at the opening ceremony.

“It is time for Africans to promote the loincloth under a new sky and arouse vocations,” she added, insisting that the major objective of “Fleur de Lys” is to “create an exchange platform, with producers, distributors, stylists, couturiers and loincloth consumers” she said.

“Thus, the show was an opportunity to discover the richness of African art and promote its emergence,” Okemba said.

She stressed the need to “encourage an active support of people to use the loincloth in their dressing and the development of entrepreneurship”.

With the loincloth, she said, young people can have an opportunity to create jobs through a “variety of activities” offered by its marketing.

After the ribbon cutting symbolizing the official opening of the show, First Lady Antoinette Sassou Nguesso visited the various stands.

The event communication agency “Fleur de Lys” was set up in 2013 by Prisca Pamela Okemba with the aim of promoting African culture.
